Can sleep paralysis be explained scientifically yet?

I'm not technically informed about sleep paralysis, but schizophrenia has run in my family for generations, and I've long been baffled and fascinated by the fact that people who have no contact or association at all with another person who has the disorder can experience essentially identical hallucinations.
